Tooth Decay Treatment Berwick

Tooth decay, also known as dental cavity, occurs when there is a hole in the tooth. Often, dental decay goes unnoticed until sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods arises, or when a throbbing toothache develops, indicating that the decay has reached and affected the nerve.

Tooth decay is primarily caused by the buildup of bacterial plaque on teeth over time. Foods high in carbohydrates, such as sugary foods and drinks, fuel the bacteria in our mouth to produce acid. This acid breaks down the tooth surface, forming cavities. As the decay progresses, it can reach the soft dentine and eventually reach the nerve, leading to severe toothache. In essence, tooth decay is the result of a combination of poor dietary choices and inadequate dental hygiene.

Preventing tooth decay is best achieved through proactive measures. This includes practicing healthy oral hygiene habits such as regular brushing and flossing, along with maintaining a diet low in sugar.

However, when decay has progressed to affect the dentine, treatment becomes necessary. This may involve filling the cavity to restore the tooth's structure. In more severe cases, a crown may be recommended to cover and protect the affected tooth. Root canal treatments can also be performed to alleviate toothache caused by decay that has penetrated the nerve.

Untreated dental decay can lead to increased pain and infection of the dental nerve. For some patients, this may necessitate a root canal treatment or even tooth extraction.
